5 Tips for Better Sleep According to Chinese Medicine
Share
From the perspective of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), sleep is deeply interconnected with the balance between Yin and Yang energies. If either of these components is not sufficiently strong, or if there is an imbalance between them, the body cannot fully enter the regenerative state that sleep represents.
1. Support Yin energy before bed
Yin represents calm, darkness, coolness, and inner peace. In the evening, it is important to avoid stimulating factors such as blue light, caffeine, or excessive food. Stewed vegetables or warm broth are excellent choices.
2. Stimulate points for a calm mind
Massage point HT7 (Shen Men) – Spirit Gate – on the wrist of the inner side of the hand. It helps calm the mind and release tension.
3. Soothing herbal tea blends
Choose a combination of herbs such as valerian, passionflower, or jasmine. Drink the tea 30 minutes before bedtime.
4. Regular routine and no extremes
TCM recommends going to bed by 11:00 PM, which is when the time of the gallbladder and then the liver begins – both these organs influence the quality of sleep and regeneration.
5. Supplement kidney essence
The kidneys store our innate Jing essence, which is crucial for deep sleep. Enjoy bone broth or black sesame seeds to support them.
“When Yin embraces Yang, the body falls asleep in peace.” — Chinese proverb
Conclusion
Sleep is not just a biological need, but a space for the renewal of our life force. When you learn to perceive the rhythm of nature and adapt to it, the quality of your sleep will naturally improve.
